The Exhibition - 'The Original Art of Peter and Jane and More'

Well Loved Tales and Children's Classics

Among Martin Aitchison’s prolific output for Ladybird Books were his illustrations for some of the most famous fairy stories and folk tales of all, including Snow White, Rapunzel, The Princess and the Frog and Rumpelstiltskin.

Ladybird had published these titles previously, but Martin was commissioned in the late 1970’s and 1980’s to produce fresh illustrations, ready for a relaunch of the popular 606d series. In addition to these universally loved tales, Martin also illustrated stories such as The Lost World, Wind in the Willows and Gulliver’s Travels for the Children’s Classics series (740), the latter being perhaps his most impressive work for Ladybird.

Providing a fresh visual treatment for such well-known stories was inevitably a challenge, one to which he rose, producing illustrations marked by gracefulness, striking visual expressions and delightful colour, without mimicking earlier versions.

As with the ‘Great Artists’ series, these books gave him further opportunity to work with his wife Dorothy, who adapted ‘The Firebird’, a traditional Russian Folklore tale.

Martin also illustrated two books from the very popular 'Read it Yourself' series 777, The Magic Stone and The Magic Paintbrush.
